Why Paddle Weight Matters

Every paddle comes with a base weight range for a reason. A heavier paddle offers extra power and stability. A lighter paddle gives you more hand speed and touch.

The secret? It’s not just about total weight, it’s about where that weight sits (aka balance, swing weight, twist weight).

Core Weight Ranges (for context)

• Lightweight paddles: under ~7.3 oz (≈ 207 g) - great for fast reaction and control play
  
• Midweight paddles: ~7.3 to 8.3 oz - ideal balance between power and speed
  
• Heavy paddles: over ~8.3 oz - heavier feel, more punch behind shots
  

These are starting points. Many players fine-tune within these ranges using weight tape.

How to Customize Weight: Step by Step

1. Decide your goal

• More power / deeper drives? Add mass toward the top or corners.
  
• More control / faster hand speed? Add mass near the throat or handle area.
  
• Better stability? Distribute small amounts evenly along sides.
  

2. Use small increments

Start with 1–3 grams (⅓ to 1⁄10 of an ounce). Overdoing it can make your paddle sluggish or unbalanced.

3. Choose adhesive tape wisely

Lead tape is common but toxic, cover it with protective tape. Tungsten tape is safer (no skin contact concerns) though typically more expensive.

Tapes come in various widths and weights per inch, choose based on your paddle’s frame thickness.

4. Apply tape in the right zones

Using your reference image as a guide:

• Top edge: boosts power, shifts balance upward
  
• Top corners: adds power and enlarges a sweet spot
  
• Side edges: improves balance, modest power boost
  
• Bottom corners: fine tuning, modest effects
  
• Throat (near handle): increases stability and feel
  

You want to avoid placing weight in zones that overly twist the paddle or shift its vibration modes negatively.

5. Test and adjust

After each small addition, take your paddle to the court for a few rallies. Feel for differences in swing speed, control, and fatigue. Adjust as needed, withdrawing tape or relocating it.

• Less is often more: Many pro players rarely add more than 4–8 g overall.
